Visit Rail Explorers in Boone

We were gifted tickets to Rail Explorers for Christmas last year and pulled together the family to enjoy an evening out without the kiddos. In case you’re not familiar, Rail Explorers are pedal-powered bikes that you ride on an actual railroad. Super cool concept and it’s all over the country.

It was a really unique experience I think everyone should check out!!

I ended up getting asked so many questions so here are things that are super fresh since we just went.

You can enjoy a picnic

My SIL knew this ahead of time so we packed up our own coolers to bring sandwiches and other snacks to enjoy at the picnic tables. We stopped by Alluvial on the way which was perfect.

Dress warm

It was high 80s that day so naturally I wore a dress. I listened to my wise, wise husband though when he told me I should bring a jacket. With all the peddling, it did get pretty chilly! I would have worn much more comfortable clothes and as it hits colder seasons, definitely bundle up. (This is my strongest piece of advice to overdress). There’s a big bin on the bike too so if you need to strip to less layers, you can!

It is loud

The experience of peddling is pretty loud! So don’ t plan on having heartfelt conversations because you’ll just be yelling WHAT???? to one another the whole time. I could have benefited from ear plugs tbh!

Knowing how loud it was, I don’t think my 3.5 year old would have enjoyed it. I don’t know the age requirements, but I probably wouldn’t attempt to bring her along until she’s 4-5. Kids who attended seemed to really enjoy it!

Bring a beverage or two

You can have beverages with you on the adventure! Cheers.

BATHROOM ONLY AT STATION

If you do bring your own beverages, there’s no place to use the restroom while riding, so plan on the forest nearby and maybe bring some tp if you’re planning ahead. The bathrooms onsite are very clean.

It might be scary

I can’t speak for you but you might be scared if you don’t like heights. There is a very tall bridge you go over! I felt fine the whole time but I don’t have a natural fear of heights.

Ok, I think that’s it! I LOVED doing the nighttime tour where the sun was setting, and we got to see the blue moon (great pic Val). If you go, I want to hear about your experience!
